    My Summary of the Smarter Sustainability Reporting Conference

    Yesterday, I attended the Smarter Sustainability Reporting Conference in London, presented as “a must attend event for anyone looking to improve upon the quality and communication of their sustainability report.” Besides impressive networking opportunities, the event was extremely well organized (congrats to the Sustainable Business team) and the agenda offered a deep review of the trends Sustainability reporting is facing today…and will face tomorrow. Below is a personal summary of the notes I took during the conference. It is not aimed to be exhaustive but reflects what I think were the most interesting points highlighted.     10 Communication Tips to Produce the Best CSR Report Ever

    One of your 2011 resolutions might be to publish or improve your company CSR Report. If you are not familiar with this exercise or are unsure how to properly communicate CSR data, you will find below 10 key tips that top companies are using and which will help you improve the quality and effectiveness of your report.     Global Reporting Initiative and Carbon Disclosure Project get closer

    The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) are the 2 main tools businesses utilize to report their GHG emissions. The GRI provides standards for companies that want to report on their environmental, social or corporate governance performance, and is used by more than 1,300 organizations from 64 countries. The CDP scores companies on their responses to a questionnaire that evaluates their GHG emissions reporting, and poll over 2,500 organizations.

    How carbon reporting can become more credible

    Esther Rodriguez, Associate Director of Carbon Smart, a consultancy on sustainability and carbon, discusses in an Ethical Corporation article about the growing number of large companies that report on their environmental performance, and particularly their carbon emissions. However, she also highlights the lack of independent verifications conducted on companies’ carbon data and insists on the importance of having an independent third party to “assure readers that reported information is reliable”.
